Lesson 5 - Understanding Temperature Measurements

Temperature

At the most basic level, the concept of air temperature seems pretty simple: anybody can walk outside and see if it feels hot or cold. But the words hot and cold are hardly precise measurements, so for centuries scientists have searched for better, more accurate ways to describe the exact amount of heat present in the air. Today, scientists can use vapor pressure, semiconductors, or even fiber optics in gauging temperatures, but those advanced techniques still owe their origins to the basic thermometer.
